What is a portable light tower?
A trailer mounted generator with a telescoping mast and a set of lamp heads, usually raising to about 30 feet. It tows behind a pickup, deploys on outriggers, and runs unattended through a shift on its own fuel tank. Nothing connects to a building, which is the whole point: a site with no supply gets light on the first evening rather than after a temporary power pole is installed. Where a permanent supply is coming anyway, the tower covers the gap until it arrives.
How much area does one cover?
Enough for a working zone rather than a whole site. A single tower at full mast height covers a broad area for general movement and a much smaller one at the intensity needed for detailed work, so the answer depends on the task rather than the acreage. Plan one tower per active work face, plus one for the compound where the storage container and tools sit, plus one covering the restroom and welfare area. That last one gets forgotten most often and causes the most complaints.
Why light the restroom area?
Because an unlit restroom at 6pm in December stops being used, and a facility that is not used does not satisfy anything. OSHA 1926.51(c) requires one toilet facility for up to 20 workers and then one seat and one urinal per 40 as the crew grows, and the requirement is that the facility is available and usable rather than merely present. The same applies to washing: OSHA 1926.51(f)(1) requires washing facilities wherever crews apply paints, coatings, herbicides or insecticides, and 29 CFR 1910.141(d)(2) specifies soap and either towels or a dryer. A handwashing station nobody can find in the dark is not doing its job. Light the cluster where the standard porta potty rental units stand and the problem disappears.
What about events?
Same principle, higher stakes. A festival or a concert that runs past sunset needs light on every path the public uses, and above all on the restroom clusters, where a dark approach across uneven ground is a genuine hazard. A county fair with an evening programme is the same. Accessible units need it most, since ADA Standards 213.2 requires at least 5 percent of clustered units, and never fewer than one, to be accessible, and an ADA accessible porta potty reached across an unlit route is not accessible in practice. Where should a tower be placed?
On firm level ground, with the outriggers fully deployed and the mast clear of cables and branches. Position it so the light falls across the work rather than into the eyes of anyone approaching, and keep it far enough from a neighbouring property that spill is not a complaint. On a public facing site, aim it inward. Refuelling access matters too, because a tower parked behind a fence line becomes awkward the moment it needs a top up. How long does it run?
Through a full night shift on a single tank under normal use, with run time falling as load and weather demand more. On a long hold we schedule refuelling with the rest of the site service, which is the same visit that pumps the restrooms, so the crew is not managing it. Does it need a permit?
On private property, no. On a street or any part of the public right of way, placement needs confirming with the City of Gaithersburg first, exactly as it would for a dumpster or a restroom. What does light tower rental cost?
A rate by duration plus delivery and collection, with fuel handled either by you or on the service schedule. What else goes on the same order?
On a working site, the whole welfare and security set. Temporary fence around the compound, a roll-off dumpster or a 40 yard container for debris, a storage container for tools, restrooms sized to the crew and a portable sink where washing is required. How tall does the mast go?
Around 30 feet on a standard unit, which is the height that gives useful spread without excessive glare at ground level. Lower it in high wind and follow the operating instructions on the unit.
Is it loud?
It is a generator, so it makes generator noise. On a commercial site that is rarely an issue. On a residential edge, check local hours and position the unit away from the boundary.
Can I run tools off it?
Some units offer auxiliary outlets, and the answer depends on the model we send. Tell us what you need to power when you order, because a dedicated temporary power pole is often the better solution for tools.
